This is an outstanding find of a beautiful, deeply carved, largetraditional mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 60 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, \"West Germany\" by the \"Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company.\" An original name for the company that did a great deal to popularize the modern cuckoo clock since they were quick to mobilize after WWII and did all they could to get one of their high quality clocks into the hands of GI\'s returning home after the war. My Father brought one home and I remember it to this day. The clock is breathtaking and sports a gorgeous, blended walnut and color finish; very nice! It is a wonderful clock, ornately detailed and carved. It is a stunning clock, works quite well, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it should. It\'s an impressive size too measuring about 13\" or so high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6\" at its deepest point, and about 9 1/2\" at its widest point. The clock is well preserved and carved the old world, high standard way from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The clock front is designed to look like an intricate grape vine and adorned with five, large, deeply carved, wavy wooden grape leaves and a vining branch; very nice! There is a beautifully carved, large wooden bird nestled in the vine to the right of the dial and his twin is mounted to the left of the dial. Both appear to be starting at an even larger bird in the vine atop the clock looking as though he is ready to take flight. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching, fancy hands to point out the time. The country name, \"W Germany\" is found on the lower dial. The back door is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement bearing the Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company name and the Germany point of origin too.A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall bellows or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look good and make good sound. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current hour before going back inside the case and closing the door behind him; absolutely fascinating! Keep in mind that even though it looks rather new, it is not. It is an old clock and like all mechanical clocks, it will require maintenance. We don\'t know the service history though the movement does show signs of past service. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved, unusual wooden fir tree pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights.I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and found average or less signs of use and no missing parts. I did find a couple of old, hard to see repairs on the lower frame but they\'re not detracting...I doubt if anything could. The clock is just gorgeous on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a rare, antique, mechanical Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it. offer with absolute confidence; you have found a clock you can be proud of!
