Paris, February 5, 1804 — 15 Pluviôse, Year XII
An imposing French Consular document headed “Au nom du peuple français,” issued in the name of Napoleon Bonaparte as First Consul and addressed to the president of the canton of Herbault.
Printed and completed in manuscript, the summons directs the president to convene the canton assembly, publicize its meeting throughout the canton, and carry out the prescribed governmental procedures. A notable provision reserves control of the assembly’s policing to its president, prohibiting armed forces from approaching or entering the meeting place without his request.
The document bears a “Bonaparte” signature above a large embossed Republic seal, with countersignatures appearing to be those of Interior Minister Jean-Antoine Chaptal and Secretary of State Hugues-Bernard Maret. The printed place of issue, Saint-Cloud, has been corrected in manuscript to Paris.
A visually striking example of government under the Consulate, combining formal typography, manuscript entries, ministerial signatures, and the surviving Republican seal.
Condition: Age toning, scattered small spots, surface undulation and creasing, and minor marginal wear. The printed text remains clear, and the applied seal retains a well-defined impression. Assessment is based on the photographed face and signature detail.
The personal autograph status of the “Bonaparte” signature has not yet been independently established.
