Premier CollectionEST. 1998 Martha Graham Erick Hawkins Cave Heart Dance Set Isamu Noguchi c1940s Photo
This is a silver gelatin photograph that is unmounted and is 10 x 8 inches (254x203mm).
It shows a male dancer, identified as Erick Hawkins, in a dynamic pose with his arms raised and leaning backwards. He is wearing a dark, strappy top and shorts, and is barefoot on a wooden floor. Behind him stands a female dancer, identified as Martha Graham, who is mostly concealed within a tall, dark, draped fabric structure with only her face visible. The setting includes a minimalist sculptural element on the stage.
The reverse has handwritten text in blue ink reading \'Martha Graham and Erick Hawkins in \"Cave of the Heart\"\'. Below this, it states \'Set by Isamu Noguchi\' and \'Music by Samuel Barber\'.
This photograph comes from a privately curated collection assembled over more than fifty years by an experienced collector. The images were individually sourced from galleries, dealers, sales, and other collections, with a consistent focus on strong composition, atmosphere, and historical interest.
This collection is being dispersed in stages, with several hundred additional photographs being listed each month.
