Here is a large genuine fossil ammonite called a scaphite, an iridescent ammonite found in the Fox Hills Formation of South Dakota. From the Cretaceous, the last period of the age of Dinosaurs.
This beauty measures 101.9 mm. at the longest measurement using calipers (4.01\"). You can see colorful iridescence on both the front, and some more on the back side. It is easier to see in bright light. The back side has a bit of its original matrix left. The specimen weighs about 382 grams (13.58 oz.)
Ammonites resembled today\'s Nautilus, with some differences such as the chamber shapes and position of the siphuncle (siphon tube). Ammonites swam the seas for about 175 million years before being wiped out in the KPg event 66 million years ago, which also killed all the non-avian dinosaurs.
Amazing to still have iridescent shell after 66+ million years!
