Lockheed 10 Electra - Amelia Earhart
By 2 July, 1937, Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan had flown her Lockheed Electra 10E special NR16020 more than 22,000 miles. The next leg was entirely over water with fuel capacity only 1,151 gallons giving them a range of about 4,400 miles.
Her overhead instruments included the usual clock, engine gauges, and an Outside Air Temperature gauge likely added on her stop in then Batavia (Jakarta, Indonesia). Warm air sometimes increases fuel consumption.
Her flying was made less tedious by a new Sperry A2 Autopilot. Above her left ear was a Bendix Aircraft Receiver with a special crystal for 485-500kHz Maritime band distress call. There was a Bendix RA-1B (or similar) controlling the Western Electric 20B receiver. This setup received on bands 1880420kHz, 550-1500kHz, 1500-4000kHz, and 4000-10000kHz. Earhart reported receiving a 7500kHz signal from Itasca (strategically positioned navigation assistance ship), but she was unable to get a Radio Direction Finder bearing.
Somewhere in the mix, there was the Bat oscillator for continue wave, but neither Earhart nor Noonan were capable of using Morse Code.
