Japanese Tokoname or Chinese Yixing Red Pottery Dragon Ewer Pitcher Signed 11\"
This listing is for what appears to be a Japanese Meiji-style Tokoname redware pottery OR Chinese Yixing Zisha red ceramic clay ewer/pitcher with a dragon / clouds motif relief. It features a molded red clay traditional Chinese Tianqiuping or Globular shape/form with a bulbous round base topped with a straight cylindrical neck form with a handle in the form of a scaly dragon body running from the bulbous base to the top of the cylinder. The underside of the form includes 2 chop-mark style seal marks—one that appears to be a Japanese seal mark and the other a Chinese seal mark (as described in the bullet-points below). I do not know if the piece was made by a Chinese factory using Japanese motifs on a Chinese form/shape or made in Tokoname Japan with Japanese motifs on a Chinese style shape/form; nor do I know what clay material was used for making the vessel. Will blend perfectly in collections including vintage Asian, Chinese & Japanese ceramics, pottery and artwork. It does have wear so please read complete details below and review photos closely for condition. Please note that the piece will be properly packaged and boxed in order to avoid any damage during transit.Thank you and enjoy!ITEM DETAILS:
  • Approximate weight is 5 lbs
  • Measures approximately 7.5\" x 7.5\" x 11\" tall
  • Condition: In vintage pre-owned used condition with wear including dulling/discoloring/brown areas on the textured cloud surface, white paint splatters in different areas of the surface, debris/dirt/gunk/grime on the interior bottom of the vessel, uneven surface finish, kiln/firing fractures/cracks in the surface of the details as shown in photos, unevenly formed surface shapes/details, dirt, dust, grime, fingerprints, smudging, loose fibers/lent, stains, scuffing, scratches, abrasions, dirt/dust/grime caked into the incised details & crevices, open air pockets in the surface of the clay, discoloring, stains, oxidation, uneven surface textures/finish/form and overall wear from age and handling. Please see photos for details.
  • Age/era: Unknown, the online search tools that I used suggest that the piece is from the Meiji period but I think that it was likely made sometime in the mid to late 1900s but I cannot guarantee.
  • Origin: Japan or China
  • Marks: The bottom of the vessel includes 2 chop mark style seals which I have attempted to translate/identify via online image search tools & translation tools but CANNOT guarantee the accuracy of the results> The top seal appears to POSSIBLY read大日本 (Dai Nippon) — meaning \"Great Japan\" & 常滑製 (Tokoname sei) — meaning \"Made in Tokoname\". The bottom seal POSSIBLY reads組龍製工 (Zu Long Zhi Gong) — meaningCrafted by Zu Long / Zu Long Workshop (which is a Chinese manufacturer of ceramicware). I do not know the reasoning behind there being a Japanese seal mark and a Chinese seal mark.
  • Material: Unknown red clay/ceramic pottery
