The Lockheed U2, nicknamed the "Dragon Lady, is an American single-engine, high–altitude reconnaissance aircraft operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) since the 1950s. Designed for all-weather, day-and-night intelligence gathering at altitudes above 70,000 feet, the U-2 has played a pivotal role in aerial surveillance for decades.
Two aircraft, Air Force Serial No. 80-1063 (which was a new build), and Serial No. 80-1097 (converted from a TR-1A model), were built/modified as earth resources research aircraft, moved from the United States Air Force (USAF) to The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and operated by the NASA High-Altitude Missions Branch, Ames Research Center. NASA flies Ser. No. 80-1097 as N809NA and Ser. No. 80-1063 as N806NA.
This aircraft (N809A) belongs to the late-production group of Lockheed's TR-1A/U-2R family. The TR-1 was essentially the tactical-reconnaissance evolution of the enlarged U-2R, developed by Lockheed's Skunk Works.Unlike the original small U-2A, the U-2R/TR-1 family had the dramatically larger wings, longer fuselage, large under-wing sensor pods, and substantially greater payload capability that you associate with today's ER-2.
This Hobby Master 1:72 scale diecast reproduction of N809A is a very rare model that includes:
- Accurate razor-sharp NASA markings
- Highly detailed factory mold
- Detailed cockpit
- Pilot figure
- Closed canopy option
- Open canopy option
- Detailed landing gear
- Wingtip "Pogo" wheels
- Inflight gear covers
- Functioning speed brakes
- Display stand
All sales are final. Shipping to the USA only. This is the only one available.
The approximate dimensions are: 10.5" long with a 17.25" wingspan.
NOTE: This Hobby Master reproduction of NASA's high altitude research aircraft is a highly detailed and very rare model. It will make an excellent addition to any Lockheed collector, any NASA collector, any U-2 series aircraft collector or any aviation enthusiast's collection.
NOTE: The second to the last photograph in the series is N809A on descent with the speed brakes deployed. The last photograph is an incredible view from one of the U-2's high altitude flights.
