See pictures for detail and check out my other listings. Leather on front is slightly lifting from the metal, I’m
sure it can be glued if needed. Not sure if you can see it in the photos. View my response and buy with confidence!!

It is a compact, hinged metal case (nickel-plated brass or similar) with leather or leatherette panels on the faces. The central script reads “Lanterne de poche” (“pocket lantern”). The markings “C. G.” (likely the maker or model identifier) and “Breveté S.G.D.G.” appear at the bottom. “Breveté S.G.D.G.” is the standard French patent notice meaning “patented without government guarantee” (Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement), used from the mid-19th century until 1968.

How it works
These ingenious little devices fold flat to fit in a pocket or purse (closed size is typically around 8 cm long × 4.5 cm wide × 2 cm thick). When opened (often via a spring or button mechanism), hinged sides with mica (or early glass/celluloid) windows swing out to form a small lantern enclosure. A candle holder deploys in the center, and the metal interior acts as a reflector. Many also include a match compartment and striker (making them a combined lantern + pyrogène/match safe). A small wire handle folds out for carrying or hanging.
It is a practical pre-electric “flashlight” from the era of candles and matches—portable, self-contained lighting for travel, evenings out, or emergencies.
