Spectacular museum-grade pieces of American Civil War calvary history. This is a matching set consisting of an original Model 1859 U. S. Army riding/bridle complete with its iron curb bit, curb chain, and brass headstall rosettes, alongside its matching heavy leather martingale featuring a prominent 3.75 x 4\" brass heart breast shield.
This set was recently discovered in a farm structure in Lake County, Ohio(near Perry/Madison) and in true uncleanness, \"as found\" barn condition. The leather exhibits an incredible aged patina. And the brass heart shows authentic use. There is a small area of rodent damage on the collar strap neat the back of the collar, as shown in the photos.
There are incredible VETERAN provenance & markings. The historic value of this set is heavily elevated by the clear, matching period markings painted and carved directly into the collar leather backing on the martingale brass heart (photos). The white-period painted initials C. P. W. matches Private Charles P. Wickham of the 55th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The carved Field Campaign Numbers, 9-20, references September 20, tge bloodiest and most pivotal day of the Western Campaign at the Battle of Chickamauga (1863), a campaign the 55th Ohio was immediately rushed into as a part of the 11th Corps reinforcements.
Untouched and uncleaned! Absolutely no restoration, oiling, or cleaning has been attempted.
Includes the full bridle headstall, original iron curbbit with intact curb chain, brass accent rosettes, full-length leather reins, and the heavy leather breast strap with the large brass shield. Tge leathers are dry but completely stable and structurally intact.
The clear markings on the leather backing on the brass heart is the authentic provenance supporting sale pricing.
