B. MENÉNDEZ Y HNOS. — RARE EARLY 20TH-CENTURY TOBACCO BAND
An extremely rare tobacco band or factory strip bearing the inscription “REPÚBLICA DE CUBA — B. MENÉNDEZ Y HNOS.”, preserved as an evocative piece of early 20th-century tobacco and commercial ephemera.
The reference to the Republic of Cuba places the piece in the Republican period following 1902, during an era in which Havana remained one of the world’s principal centres of cigar manufacture and export.
Printed on thin period paper, the band displays finely detailed ornamental printing and distinctive typography. It survives with attractive natural age toning, folds and minor edge wear, all consistent with its age and preserved without restoration.
B. Menéndez y Hnos. formed part of the historic tobacco-manufacturing tradition associated with Havana during the pre-revolutionary period. Today, surviving labels, bands and factory ephemera from these firms are collected both for their graphic character and as documentary evidence of the international cigar trade.
No identical example has been located in the market, making this a particularly interesting piece for specialist collectors of vitolfilia, historic tobacco ephemera and early commercial printing.
