An original Civil War field issued victory order issued HQ 2nd Division, 12th Army Corp, at Wauhatchie, Tennessee, Nov 17, 1863- General John W Geary congratulates his Pennsylvanians for their role "in the recent action" (Geary's men stopped Longstreet's attempt to close the "cracker line" established along the Tennessee River, supplying the Union troops beseiged at Chattanooga. Geary's son was killed in the Battle and Geary defeated Longstreet's overwhelming forces) This order is issued by Geary to his men encamped at Wauhatchie, at the base of Lookout Mountain, just 7 days before Geary's Division again won glory in the Battle of Lookout Mountain and defeat of General Bragg's Confederate Army. 1p, ptd 8 x 5". Edge wear, Small sepia ink stain on reverse, Overall VG. A rare Chattanooga Campaign Tennessee victory order printed in the field.
General Orders were printed as issued with date & location; at the end of a year the regimental adjutant might retain them loose or simply string bind them by punching holes and stringing on ¼” red cloth string tape (the source of the old expression "government red tape"). Sometimes an officer or HQclerk might take a group of orders to a local print shop or bookbinder and have an accumulation bound with leather or cloth covers.
Usually, American Military Orders of the 19th century including Civil War era were printed on an 8 x 5” sheet of quality rag paper.
