Colonel James Duncan Graham was born in Virginia and as US Army Topographical Engineer surveyed portions of the Louisiana Purchase with the Long Expedition, 1822, The US-Republic of Texas Border 1840, the US-Canada Border, 1849 and The Mason-Dixon Line1850. He died in 1865 while surveying Lake Michigan. Brother-in-law of General George Meade he was the father of 3 sons, one of whom, William M Graham rose to the rank of Major General USA. The other son James Duncan Graham, Jr was a US Naval Officer. An Original Civil War Letter (partial) to Colonel James Duncan Graham, Corps Topographical Engineers at Detroit, Michigan from his son Wlliam Montrose Graham at Camp Duncan D.C. , January 23, 1862 - He writes re family and politics he does not think "there Is the slightest chance of the Negro Bill passing dueto strongest feeling against the Abolitionists in Congress, by all classes and most particularly by the Army.TheAbolitionists, "bitter against McClellanare wishing Fremont had become Commander in Chief ""but Mr Lincoln has too much sense, and he writer blames Sec of War Cameron's removal as due to Cameron's abolitionist interference with McClellan". He grieves with Father over Duncan's Conduct (son James Duncan Graham, Jr).The 2pp partial letter ends with no other details. The letter mentions Mrs K and Lieut. Poe ( Orlando M Poe, also a Topo Engineer and makes mention of his collection of "mounted pay" (as Colonel 2nd DC Infantry), indicating, along with his station at Camp Duncan, DC the writer is Infantry Colonel William Montrose Graham , not a naval officer. 2pp 8 x 10" ink. Minor wear, Overall VG Condition, a partial letter missing the last page(s). Comes with the Postal Cover addressed to "Colonel James D Graham, "Corps Topl Engineers U.S, Army Detroit, Michigan" where Graham was at work on the Great Lakes. Comes with service and bio info. for Colonel James D Graham and Colonel William Montrose Graham. An intimate letter from a notable U S Army son to his famous Father attacking the Abolitionists.
