From a Tucson, Arizona, collector's estate:
Authentic prehistoric Hohokam stone artifact, referred to by collectors and archaeologists as a "donut stone."
Measures approximately 3¼inches in diameter and 1¼ in thickness.
The stone is made from volcanic basalt, a volcanic stone favored by Hohokam toolmakers for its durable, coarse texture. The central hole shows biconical drilling—the hole was pecked and bored with stone tools from both sides until meeting in the center, leaving a hour-glass interior profile.
Perforated stones of this type remain one of the fascinating mysteries of Southwestern archaeology. While their exact primary function continues to be debated, prevailing archaeological theories suggest they served multiple domestic and agricultural purposes, including use as digging stick weights to break hardened desert soils, hand-held corn shellers, flywheels for mechanical pump drills, or traditional gaming discs.
Collected on the collector's family private land in Marana, Arizona, near the Shamrock Dairy archaeological site. They collected 5 donut stones in the 1950's. The other stones will be listed.
