Exceptional Antique Western Electric D2 / E1 Bakelite Rotary Telephone
This is a remarkably well-preserved early Western Electric telephone featuring the highly collectible D2 desk stand and iconic E1 Bakelite “spit-cup” handset.
Dating to approximately the 1930s Bell System era, this is far more than an old telephone. It is a beautiful piece of early American communications history and an outstanding statement piece for an office, study, library, vintage interior, industrial display, or serious telephone collection.
The telephone has a striking Art Deco-era profile, substantial black Bakelite construction, classic rotary dial, and period cloth-covered cord. The sculptural E1 handset in particular gives these early Western Electric sets an unmistakable appearance that later telephones simply do not have.
The base is clearly marked “D2 USA,” with Western Electric / E1 / Made in USA markings also present on the components.
CONDITION AND FUNCTION:
This example is in exceptionally clean condition for an antique of this age and presents beautifully. The glossy black Bakelite retains an impressive appearance with no obvious major cracks or significant damage that I can see. The dial face and number inserts remain especially attractive, and the cloth-covered cord adds tremendously to the authentic period presentation.
There are minor scratches, scuffs, finish marks and other signs of age and use when examined closely, as should be expected from a telephone approaching a century old. These do little to detract from its overall appearance. Please examine the detailed photographs, which show the exact telephone being offered and are part of the description.
The rotary dial mechanism has been tested and works perfectly. It rotates smoothly and returns properly after each number with the classic mechanical action expected from a quality Western Electric dial.
The telephone itself has NOT been connected to a telephone line or electrically tested for calling, receiving, audio, or other telephone functions.
These early Western Electric D2 desk sets were designed to operate in conjunction with a separate external subset/ringer box. That equipment is not included with this telephone.
COLLECTOR APPEAL:
Early Western Electric equipment has become increasingly desirable among collectors of Bell System memorabilia, antique telephones, early communications technology, industrial design and American history.
The combination of the D2 base, E1 Bakelite handset, rotary dial and cloth-covered cord makes this an especially attractive display piece. Its excellent overall preservation allows it to display beautifully from virtually any angle.
Whether added to an established telephone collection or displayed on its own, this is the kind of authentic vintage object that immediately draws attention and starts conversations. It has tremendous presence on a desk, shelf or display table and represents an era when everyday equipment was built with remarkable materials, craftsmanship and industrial design.
This is an authentic period Western Electric telephone, not a modern reproduction or decorative replica.
Includes the Western Electric D2 telephone, E1 handset, cloth-covered cord and attached components exactly as photographed. No external subset/ringer box or other equipment is included.
Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition.
Rotary dial mechanism tested and working perfectly. Electrical telephone functions remain untested.
A beautiful, highly collectible Western Electric telephone and an outstanding statement piece from the golden age of American telecommunications.
