Description
A truly beautiful antique Victorian miniature vinaigrette, dating to approximately c.1870–1890. The color is a blue/green mix, more blue for sure. It\'s hard to capture the color with my camera.
This wonderful little piece features a rich blue/green cut-to-clear glass body with deeply cut oval/faceted decoration and a beautifully cut starburst design on the base. Its tiny size and jewel-like appearance make it especially charming.
The silver top is still very nice, has a few little, tiny dings but nothing that takes away from it. The hinged outer lid opens to reveal a lovely, piercedgrille, the characteristic feature of a vinaigrette. Originally, a small piece of sponge or absorbent material scented with aromatic vinegar or perfume would have been placed beneath the grille.
The silver top assembly screws onto the glass body and can be completely removed.
The metal has beentested and tests positive for silver. There are no visible hallmarks or fineness marks, so I am describing it simply as silver rather than sterling.
A wonderful survivor from the Victorian era and a particularly attractive example for a collector of antique vinaigrettes, miniature scent bottles, cut glass, vanity items, or antique silver.
Approximate Size:
Approximately 1 1/4\" across and \" high. A TRUE MINIATURE. Please see the ruler and quarter photographs for scale — this is a genuinely tiny miniature piece.
Condition
Beautiful antique condition, especially considering its approximately 135+ years of age. As always with these beautifully sharp cut edges there are littleedge flea bites/flakes at the cut glass edges exactly what you would expect to see to confirm age. Shown closely in the photographs. Otherwise, the glass presents beautifully with strong color and crisp cutting. The silver shows an attractive natural aged patina. The hinged lid pierced floral grille and screw-on mount are all present. Shut tight. The line on the inside is not a split, it\'s where the little band ? connects hope that makes sense. Please enlarge and examine all photographs as they are an important part of the condition description.
