Up for sale is a rare and historically significant Iroquois trilobe Whimsy pincushion handcrafted circa 1870s. It was most likely made on a Mohawk reserve near Montreal, Canada or in upstate New York near the Canadian boarder.
This piece is part of the iconic “whimsy” tradition—beaded souvenir items created by Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy) artisans for sale to tourists during the late 19th century.
What sets this piece apart is its patriotic flag motif, a rarer and more labor-intensive design used by Mohawk beadworkers to appeal to American tourists. These motifs—often featuring U.S. flags, eagles, and floral flourishes—were produced in limited quantities and are now highly sought after by collectors and institutions.
This pincushion comes from the personal collection of Gary Grouse, my late father—a respected Native American historian and collector who specialized in ceremonial and culturally significant artifacts. His documentation identifies this item as a Mohawk-made whimsy, and its tribal origin has been further confirmed by other leading experts in Iroquois beadwork. A printed copy of my father’s notes is available upon request.

These items reflect both cultural resilience and artistic innovation during a pivotal era in Haudenosaunee history.
