Antique George Baxter The Holy Family Oil Color Print, Circa 1850
Original George Baxter oil-color print titled The Holy Family, published circa 1849-1850 after the Gobelins tapestry then at Brougham Hall and traditionally associated with Raphael. This print is built from a steel key impression and thirteen separately registered color blocks, then glazed. It measures approximately 5 7/8 by 3 7/8 inches and remains unframed on its original period tinted card mount.
Baxter\'s engraved attribution present on the art and the mount retains the crowned oval Baxter stamp, the notice that licenses were granted to work his patented process, and the long Brougham Hall dedication using the documented \"under the patronage of his Lordship\" wording. This mounted state is catalogued as Courtney Lewis 234a and subject as 226 (CL226) under H.G. Clarke & J.H. Rylatt.
Condition
- Original tinted card mount has overall age toning, scattered foxing, staining along the lower edge, worn and softened corners, several handling creases, and a slight wave from handling.
- Lower-left corner has heavier wear and some separation within the layers of the card.
- Printed image retains very presentable color and is largely free of creasing. One very light diagonal crease at the right with some fiber showing, also light handling marks under scrutiny.
- The Brougham Hall inscription is faded but remains legible in person.
- The reverse shows greater age discoloration and localized, non-sticky brown staining of uncertain origin. There is no odor or visible mold.
- Unframed as shown. The print is housed in a new clear archival Mylar sleeve with a supporting backer.

Historical Notes
Baxter advertised that more than 400,000 examples of The Holy Family had sold by January 1852, and his 1860 retirement catalogue raised the claim to more than 700,000. A popular print, but complete examples retaining the original stamped and inscribed Brougham mount aren\'t super common.
One collector note if this is your first stop. It\'s generally good to examine the registration and the definition of finely worked areas such as faces and hands on prints, since later impressions can show the effects of worn plates and blocks.
