Antique French Porcelain Bellows Box Hand Painted Cherubs Putti Gilt Ormolu
Size 2.25” x 4.5” Excellent Condition.
Up for your consideration is a beautiful, rare antique 19th-century French porcelain novelty trinket or snuff box. This exquisite cabinet piece is creatively modeled in the whimsical shape of fireplace hearth bellows. The hinged lid features a finely executed, hand-painted romantic scene depicting cherubs (putti) lounging within a classical forest landscape. The central vignette is framed by a rich, elegant border of raised gilt-scroll accents and pink ribbons against a soft, creamy porcelain background. The side panels of the box are further decorated with a continuous, delicate hand-painted floral garland. The box is fitted with its original, heavy gilt-metal (ormolu/brass) mounts, including a beautifully contoured rim, an integrated rear tab hinge, a decorative tapered nozzle, and a handle complete with a hanging loop hole. The interior and base feature a pristine, smooth, high-glaze white porcelain finish. While the piece is unsigned/unmarked—which is entirely characteristic of many high-quality luxury novelties produced in Paris (Vieux Paris) during the late Victorian era—the superb quality of the hand-painting and the precise fit of the metalwork speak to its fine European craftsmanship.
Condition Report:Porcelain: Excellent antique condition. No chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. The interior glaze is clean and bright, minor pepper spot on interior.
Paint/Gilding: The hand-painted scene remains vibrant and clear. There is only minor, expected age-related wear to the gold leaf trim along the outer edges.
Metal Mounts: The gilt-metal hardware shows a beautiful, untouched aged patina. The hinge operates smoothly, and the lid aligns perfectly and closes securely.
The Soft Pastels of the Cherub Painting: The Arcadian IdealWhat it means: The soft blues, flesh tones, and muted greens of the forest scene represent harmony with nature, innocence, and peace.Historical context: During the late 18th and 19th centuries, high society fell in love with the "Arcadian" ideal—a fantasy version of a pastoral, untamed paradise where problems didn't exist. By painting the cherubs (putti) in soft, natural earth and sky tones, the artist created a visual escape from crowded, industrialized 19th-century cities into a timeless, peaceful woodland.
