This is a remarkably complete mid-20th century Catholic portable sick call set, almost certainly dating to about 1945–1950.
The styling absolutely screams postwar Catholic liturgical design:
- black leatherette travel case
- vivid purple velvet interior (purple = penitential / last rites symbolism)
- chrome-plated or nickel-plated fittings
- minimalist modernist cross
- compact streamlined chalice and holy water vessel
- folding candle holders integrated into the lid
This was designed for a priest making emergency home, hospital, or deathbed visits before Vatican II changed a lot of liturgical aesthetics and practices in the 1960s.
The complete survival of:
- the pyx with host still inside
- the embroidered altar cloth
- both folding candlesticks
- detachable cross
- chalice
- holy water pitcher/ewer with original cork stopper
- paten/communion dish
…is honestly unusual. Most surviving sets are incomplete, stripped for parts, or missing the Eucharistic elements.
And yes — that wafer is a genuine communion host (unconsecrated by now, effectively archival). Tiny time capsule energy there. A very Catholic “do not throw out lightly” object.
The little pitcher was typically for holy water, sometimes wine/water for communion depending on the priest and exact kit configuration. The cross-topped cork stopper is a beautiful touch and helps date it earlier than the cheaper 1970s travel kits.
The small dish/paten was used to hold the host during administration of Communion to the sick.
The folding setup is clever:
- candlesticks swing upward
- cross slots in place
- front flap becomes a tiny altar platform
It basically transformed a bedside table into a miniature traveling altar in under a minute. Priests carried these into homes during:
- final blessings
- anointing of the sick
- bedside communion
- emergencies during flu outbreaks, war eras, rural ministry, etc.
Frankly, these kits have a strange emotional gravity. You can almost hear the quiet room, the whispered prayers, the family standing nearby trying not to cry, and the tiny candles flickering while snow piles against a 1950s hospital window somewhere in New England.
Condition & measurements:
- Purple velvet is excellent.
- Hardware is bright and clean.
- The host container still having its velvet puck insert is excellent.
- Minor denting to the pitcher foot
- Box measures 5" W x 5" T x 4" D
That little cloth is called a purificator or sometimes a corporal cloth, depending on its exact intended use in the set.
In our case, because it’s:
- square
- finely folded
- embroidered with a small cross
- paired with the pyx/paten and chalice
…it was most likely used as a mini corporal — a sacred altar cloth laid beneath the Eucharist and vessels during bedside Communion.
Basically:
- the priest unfolded it onto a table, nightstand, or even a chair
- the chalice, pyx, and paten rested on it
- the host would never directly touch ordinary furniture
The embroidered cross marks the center/front orientation.
In Catholic tradition, these linens are treated with great reverence because they may come into contact with consecrated Eucharistic particles. That’s why even this tiny travel version was carefully made and included in the kit.
The folded linen plus the still-present host is honestly the kind of detail collectors love because it suggests the set stayed intact and undisturbed for decades. Tiny portable theology kit.
