Vintage figural smoking pipe depicting a woman in a floral-decorated hat with a reddish-brown finish, contrasting carved details, curved amber-colored stem and metal-tone collar. The tobacco chamber is incorporated into the top of the hat.
Based on the surviving C. Stehr manufacturer label and historical New York pipe-trade records for the 347 Broome Street address, this piece appears to date from about the late 19th to early 20th century. An exact production date has not been established.
Includes its original fitted hard case with aged plush-lined interior. Two surviving labels inside the case provide additional history. One reads “C.A. TURPISCH'S / OWN IMPORTATION / STAPLETON NEW YORK.” A second label reads “C. STEHR / MANUFACTURER / 347 BROOME STREET / NEW YORK.”
●Pipe measures approximately 6 3/4" long × 3 1/4" tall.
●Original fitted case measures approximately 7 1/4" long × 4 3/4" wide at the widest point × 3 1/2" deep.
Pre-owned antique/vintage condition with age, discoloration, scratches, surface wear and areas of finish/color loss as pictured. The fitted case also shows age and exterior/interior wear. The pipe has not been tested for smoking or use and is being sold as a collectible.
Exact age, pipe maker, material and identity of the woman depicted have not been independently verified. C.A. Turpisch's is identified by the surviving case label as the importer/retailer while C. Stehr is identified on the separate case label as the manufacturer.
