An elegant American Art Deco–era bridge floor lamp, circa 1920–1935, featuring a striking combination of jadeite-green glass, canary-yellow uranium-glass globes, ornate metalwork, and a custom-tailored Roseart shade.
Standing approximately five feet tall, this beautifully proportioned lamp offers exceptional decorative presence. Its richly colored glass column and sculptural silhouette make it an appealing focal point beside a reading chair, sofa, or writing desk.
JADEITE GREEN & URANIUM GLASS
Three elongated, faceted jadeite-green glass sections alternate with four rounded canary-yellow glass globes, forming a distinctive architectural column. A substantial square green glass panel above the ornamental metal base completes the composition.
The yellow globes exhibit brilliant green fluorescence under ultraviolet light, as demonstrated in the accompanying blacklight photographs. This striking response adds another dimension to the lamp’s display appeal and makes it particularly interesting to collectors of uranium glass and period lighting.
The UV photographs show fluorescence in the yellow globes; the adjacent green glass sections remain comparatively dark.
ORNATE PERIOD METALWORK
A slender spiral-twist shaft rises above the glass column to an elaborate openwork bridge arm, decorated with scrolling foliage and a grape-like cluster. Scalloped metal collars frame the glass elements, creating a refined transition between the colorful column and its darker metal fittings.
The four-footed cast-metal base features elongated recessed panels and botanical relief ornament. Its aged finish combines dark tones with warm gold-toned highlights, complementing the vivid glass.
The combination of geometric glass forms and flowing ornamental detail is characteristic of the overlapping decorative tastes of the early twentieth century. The projecting bridge arm suspends the shaded light away from the upright column, providing the graceful, practical arrangement associated with period bridge lamps.
ATTRIBUTION & HISTORICAL DETAILS
Attributed to American manufacture, circa 1920–1935.
The jadeite-green and canary-yellow glass components are possibly associated with Houze Glass Company of Point Marion, Pennsylvania. This is a tentative attribution based on comparison with glass components associated with Houze; it has not been confirmed by a factory catalog or identifying glass mark. The manufacturer of the complete lamp remains unidentified.
The underside of the cast-metal base bears:
“B 87 L”
“PAT APPLD FOR”
The Leviton pull-chain socket is marked with patent number 1,241,851. Granted October 2, 1917, this patent concerns the interlocking construction of an electric lamp socket shell. It provides a documented historical reference for the socket design rather than an exact manufacturing date for the complete lamp.
The Leviton name identifies the socket manufacturer.
CUSTOM-TAILORED ROSEART SHADE
The lamp is accompanied by a handsome later bell-shaped shade bearing the label:
“Custom Tailored by Roseart”
The shade features a richly mottled amber-brown exterior, contrasting bound edges, and a cream fabric lining. Its warm coloring harmonizes beautifully with the aged metalwork and jewel-like glass accents, producing an inviting glow when the lamp is illuminated.
The Roseart shade is in excellent condition with no damage.
