This item is an antique French or European Catholic cradle medal (medalla cunero) from the Art Deco period, typically dating from the 1920s to 1930s.
• Materials: It features a cream-colored or ivory-toned bakelite/celluloid frame and hanging ring, housing a raised gold-tone or gilt metal relief medallion.
• Imagery: The center relief depicts a guardian angel watching over or cradling a sleeping child/infant.
• Purpose: Traditionally hung above or attached to a baby's crib or cradle in Catholic families as a symbol of protection.
The reverse view shows the original blue and gold "MADE IN FRANCE" paper label typical of French exports from the early-to-mid 20th century.
It also reveals the distinct metal prongs used to secure the relief medal into the molded celluloid/bakelite casing.
The piece's value rests heavily on its condition. The gold paper label is intact, the celluloid backing is uncracked, and the hanging ring remains fully functional.
I have listed this as used simply for it’s age but it was never hung in a crib or displayed. It has been stored away from UV light and heat and kept dry.
