BUCK’S STATEMENT:
There’s something quietly beautiful about this old Watkins Baking Powder tin — the way its paper label has softened and faded after more than a century of service. The silhouette of the woman on the front is now just a whisper, a ghost from the early 1900s, when a mother or wife might’ve pulled this very can from the pantry shelf to bake bread or biscuits for her family. You can almost imagine the hum of a wood stove, the scent of flour in the air, the rhythm of everyday life in the Midwest at the turn of the last century. This can was there — a small, humble part of a family’s routine, long before electricity and modern convenience filled our kitchens.
What makes it remarkable is that it survived at all. It wasn’t meant to. A simple container, designed to be used and tossed aside — yet here it stands, over 125 years later, the colors worn and the edges tired, still carrying the spirit of the home it once belonged to. Maybe it was saved for screws, buttons, or dried herbs — maybe it just felt too sturdy to throw away. Whatever its journey, it’s earned its place among the few relics that remind us how ordinary things become extraordinary simply by enduring.
