Up for sale is a fascinating, original historical photograph grouping from the Spanish-American War era (circa 1898–1901). These two photographs were purchased together at an sale decades ago and have been stored flat ever since, preserving a wonderful slice of American military history.
- Photo 1 (Large Group Field Ceremony): Measures approximately 8.5 x 11 inches total including the brittle backing. It shows a fascinating outdoor military assembly or field ceremony. Soldiers are formed in a large horseshoe shape around a central chest or area under live oak trees. The soldiers on the left are wearing standard-issue Model 1895 forage caps.
- Photo 2 (Soldier Portrait with Artillery Piece): A close-up view showing two soldiers posing outside a building next to what appears to be a spoke-wheeled field artillery carriage or caisson. The soldier on the right wears a Model 1898 campaign hat and features large, broad white corporal rank chevrons on his sleeve—the signature regulation color and style for the US Infantry during this conflict. The soldier on the left is wearing a Model 1895 forage cap with an infantry insignia on the front.
This photo is physically split into two separate pieces down the center line, but the break is clean and they line up perfectly when placed together (as shown in the pictures). No tape or glue has been used on them. This is a fantastic, untouched "named grouping" lot for a military collector, historian, or photo restorer who wants an authentic, unrepaired piece of late 19th-century history. Please review the included close-up grid photos to evaluate the condition and uniform details.
