A superb piece of Victorian English majolica from Adams & Bromley of the Victoria Pottery Works, Hanley, Staffordshire — one of the most celebrated English majolica makers of the Aesthetic Movement period.
This oval motto bread tray features a richly molded pink geranium bloom with large green leaves set against a finely detailed yellow basketweave ground. The rolled rim border is glazed in warm brown and bears the motto \"EAT THY BREAD WITH THANKFULNESS\" in raised relief lettering. Green-glazed scrolled handles terminate each end of the oval form. The verso is finished in the characteristic sponged brown glaze typical of Adams & Bromley production.
Adams & Bromley produced several majolica bread tray designs — Corn, Geranium, Water Lily, and Apple and Pears — making these among the most collectible motto wares of the period.
