A WORLD WAR II NAVAL AVIATOR
George H. W. Bush enlisted in the United States Navy shortly after his 18th birthday and became one of its youngest aviators.
In 1944, his aircraft was struck by enemy fire during a combat mission over the Pacific. Bush completed his attack before parachuting into the ocean, where he was rescued by the American submarine USS Finback. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his wartime service.
A REMARKABLE CAREER IN PUBLIC SERVICE
Before becoming president, Bush served as a member of Congress, United Nations ambassador, chairman of the Republican National Committee, United States envoy to China, director of the Central Intelligence Agency and vice president.
He became the 41st President of the United States in 1989.
LEADERSHIP AT THE END OF THE COLD WAR
President Bush helped guide the United States and its allies through the fall of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of Germany and the final years of the Soviet Union.
His administration also assembled a broad international coalition that liberated Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. He later signed the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, landmark civil-rights legislation that expanded protections for Americans with disabilities.
