When J.A. Palmer and J.N. Wilson took these photos, there was no paved road or train to Tybee Island. Travelers had to take a ferry or private skiff down the Savannah River and through salt marshes to reach Tybee.The "Famous Palmetto Tree" Location: Because of the water barriers, these 1870s stereoviews were actually taken along the Savannah and Tybee Turnpike (an early overland dirt road and causeway built on the mainland side/marsh edge heading out from Savannah toward the boat landings), or on one of the larger hammock islands like Whitemarsh or Wilmington along the way.Palmer and Wilson were photographing an isolated, naturally occurring native landmark palmetto tree along the early marsh road/ferry approach in the 1870s.****CONDITION is nice, clean view,PLEASE VIEW MY IMAGES AS THEY ARE THE CONDITION OF THE VIEW.
