Up for sale are 5 guaranteed authentic signatures of Aviation Pioneers. These autographs were all collected in the 1920's and 1930's by San Diego City Clerk, Allen Wright. The typewritten comments were added to the autograph pages by Wright.
You get the autographs of Waldo Waterman (with the inscription "Flying since 1909"); John A. Macready; William Van Dusen (better known as Bill); Franklin Seifert, and Knefler McGinis (which unfortunately is discolored having come into contact with a newspaper article discussing his exploits.)
Waterman was an early pilot, inventor, and test pilot, legendary for building the first successful flying car.
Seifertentered aviation as an Army Cadet in WWI and became a flying instructor. In 1923 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and selected for the Air Force Hall of Fame for his part in the first air-to-air refueling flight.(When you think about it, this was a rather stunning and risky accomplishment.)
Van Dusenaccompanied Charles Lindbergh on a 1928 expedition across Mexico and Central America that helped discover and map ancient Mayan ruins. He later ushered in the Jet Age with important positions at Pan Am and Eastern Airlines.
John A. Macready was an American test pilot and aviator. He is the only three-time recipient of the Mackay Trophy, and they were awarded in three consecutive years: once for altitude flight, once for transcontinental flight, and once for an endurance flight of 36 hours, 4 minutes and 32 seconds. On September 28, 1921, he climbed to 40,800 feet.On 2–3 May 1923 Macready made the first non-stop coast-to-coast flight, from Roosevelt Field, formerly Mitchell Field, 2.3 miles south-east of Mineola, Long Island, New York to Rockwell Field, North Island, San Diego, California, with a total flight time of 26 hours, 50 minutes and 48 seconds. A truly astounding individual and career. He is also credited with making the first night time bail out of a stricken plane. In World War II. He served as a colonel and commanded several Army Air Force groups.Macready was enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1968. In 1976, he was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame.
Kefler Mcginis --In January 1934, Lieutenant Commander Knefler McGinnis led Record Breaking Flight, 1934 from San Francisco, California, to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, completing the longest nonstop mass formation flight in aviation history at that time. This autograph almost certainly dates to that period, but again, note condition.
