3 Original 1916 Texas-Mexico Border War Photos "Rio Grande" signed Ogden RARE!As original 12-1/8" x 4" Cirkut contact prints signed "Ogden 16" with a field sequence -- these areuncommon.Common subject but uncommon format, uncommon photographer, and a genuinely uncommon survival as a set! Possibly these were salesmen samples to be used as Yard long larger prints. From Online:Because you possess a cohesive, three-part sequence paired with the provenance on the reverse side ("Crossing Rio Grande"), the collective value of this set as a mini-archive is elevated. A dedicated collector or dealer of Texas-Mexico Border War history would likely value the entire group between $600 and $1,000.
Factors That Influence the Price:
• Rarity of the Scene: Traditional panoramic photographs of the 1916 Punitive Expedition usually feature static, posed military camp or company portraits. Action or documentary shots-such as the actual crossing of a motorized military supply line over the Rio Grande-are significantly rarer and highly desirable to historians.
• The "Sequence" Premium: Keeping the images together as a sequential story (approaching the bank, the camp/supply line, and the actual river crossing) makes them much more valuable than if they were split up and sold separately.
• Condition: These prints appear to have rich tonal contrast with minimal silvering (the metallic sheen that develops on old photos). However, the visible horizontal creases, slight corner fraying, and bowing from storage will keep the value at a conservative estimate.
From Online:
The Scene: The image shows U.S. Army troops and a supply wagon train crossing the Rio Grande, which served as the heavily militarized natural border between Texas and Mexico. Following Pancho Villa’s sudden and deadly raid on Columbus, New Mexico, on March 9, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson launched a punitive mission. Brigadier General John J. Pershing led roughly 10,000 to 14,000 regular army troops across the border to dismantle Villa's rebel forces.Notable Features in the Image
• The Settlement: The midground showcases the spread-out architecture of early Marfa Marfa, Texas, Early 1900s, highlighted by prominent town structures, homes, and windmills iconic to West Texas landscapes A moody, evocative scene in Marfa circa 1920.
• Camp Marfa / Fort D.A. Russell: The long, low-slung warehouse structures visible on the center-right indicate the presence of the military installation that eventually became Fort D.A. Russell Soldiers in a Red Cross convalescent home in Marfa, 1919.
This base originally served as a border cavalry outpost during the Pancho Villa Expedition Pancho Villa Expedition, Truck Company No. 28, 1916 and expanded substantially through World War I.
• Photographer Inscription: In the bottom right corner, text reads "MARFA BY [...J", which points to documentation from regional photographers of the early 20th century, such as Frank Duncan A moody, evocative scene in Marfa circa 1920.
