A fascinating pair of original Victorian photographs from the 19th century, featuring two historic photographic studios in Australia and England.Offered together are two antique carte de visite (CDV) photographic portraits, both retaining their original studio details on the reverse.Photograph 1 – Victorian Gentleman, Australia, 1878A striking portrait of a young gentleman wearing a formal Victorian suit and tie.Photographed by J. W. Wilder, East Street, Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. The reverse bears a handwritten inscription apparently identifying the gentleman as Henry Walter-Bell, aged 21, with a date of July 1878.This is particularly interesting because many surviving Victorian portraits have lost the names and dates of their subjects. The handwritten information provides a fascinating connection to the history of colonial Queensland and Victorian family genealogy.Photograph 2 – Victorian Lady, Reigate, SurreyAn attractive full-length studio portrait showing a Victorian lady wearing a long dark dress and decorative hat, holding a small basket of flowers.Photographed by J. Beard, Reigate, Surrey, whose studio was situated opposite the railway station. The reverse retains the original decorative Victorian photographer’s advertisement.Historical InterestTogether, these photographs offer a glimpse into Victorian life across two continents during the 19th century. They reflect the popularity of professional portrait photography in Britain and colonial Australia, preserving period fashion, studio settings and photographic traditions.Particularly suitable for collectors of Victorian photography, Australian colonial history, British local history and genealogical memorabilia.ConditionBoth original photographic cards show age-related wear, including some fading, foxing, discolouration and minor marks. The Australian photograph has handwritten historical information on the reverse. The exact identity of the gentleman and the handwritten date have not been independently authenticated. Please examine all photographs carefully. You will receive both original Victorian photographic cards, exactly as shown.
