Hello dear customers,
Up for sale is a beautiful and impressive antique Russian Orthodox blessing reliquary cross, dating to circa the mid-19th century. This large hand-held liturgical cross was used by an Orthodox priest for blessing the faithful during religious services and ceremonies.
The cross is finely crafted from brass and richly decorated with traditional Russian enamel work. The front features the Crucified Christ in high relief, surrounded by applied enamel medallions with traditional Orthodox inscriptions and symbols. The cross is further embellished with pierced and engraved decoration, while the reverse is extensively engraved with traditional Orthodox and Pan-Slavic ornamental motifs.
Particularly interesting is its reliquary construction. The cross is made in two fitted halves, secured together by small screws, which can be opened to reveal the hollow interior compartments intended for the placement of sacred relics. Some traces of the original gold-tone surface, most probably from an earlier fire-gilded finish, remain preserved inside.
The handle is additionally decorated with beautiful applied enamel ornamentation in shades of blue and white.
The cross is all original and authentic and remains in very good condition considering its age. There are minor age-related imperfections and losses to the enamel, as clearly visible in the photos. It was found at an estate sale in Paris.
Please review all photos carefully, as they are an important part of the item description.
