Historical significance

This letter was written August 7, 1945, just one day after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and two days before Nagasaki. While the writer does not mention those events, the letter provides a fascinating snapshot of daily life and Army medical training during one of the most historic weeks of World War II.

Fitzsimons General Hospital was one of the Army's principal medical training centers during WWII, operating extensive technician schools for medical, surgical, laboratory, dental, pharmacy, and X-ray personnel. More than 120,000 enlisted technicians were trained through the Army Medical Department program during the war, with Fitzsimons serving as one of its largest schools.
