This is a traditional Japanese lacquerware (shikki) presentation case of solid soft cedar or pine wood (or Kiri) case with sliding lid and holes for cigarettes. Front has Imperial Japanese Navy anchor with cherry blossom imprinted. On reverse, printed Kanji translates on the top line as “Showa 15 (1940) September 17”; middle line as “Destroyer NOWAKI Launch Commemoration”; and bottom line as “Maizura Naval Arsenal” the military shipyard where she was built. Absolutely guaranteed original and authentic.
IJN NOWAKI (野分; \"Autumn Gale\") was a Kagerō-class destroyerof the Imperial Japanese Navy commissioned in April 1941. She saw a successful career during her service in WW2, either helping to sink or capture15 ships during the war: including the destroyers HMS STRONGHOLD and USS JOHNSTON.She also survived an encounter with US battleships during Operation Hailstonewhere she was lightly damaged by the longest ranged straddle in history. NOWAKI was finally sunk in October, 1944, at the Battle of Leyte Gulf after rescuing survivors from thesunken heavy cruiser CHIKUMA, when she was caught by a US cruiser-destroyerforce and sunk with all hands.
