Scarce Type 1 example of card #5 from the classic 1935 Gum, Inc. Mickey Mouse bubble gum set (American Card Catalog R89), graded PSA 5 EX.
This card is widely regarded by collectors as the Minnie Mouse “rookie” card of the set. It features one of the earliest full-color depictions of Minnie in the entire series — shown knitting while Mickey looks on — with the classic pun “Looks funny when she knits, doesn’t she? Suppose she’s a knit-wit?”
Why Type 1 matters:Only cards #1–24 exist in two varieties. The Type 1 (first-print / “first edition”) versions have the wording “THIS PICTURE ANSWERS QUESTION ON OTHER SIDE” at the bottom of the front and place the answer on the same card. Gum, Inc. quickly switched to the Type 2 format (answer on the next card) to encourage kids to buy more packs. As a result, Type 1 cards are the scarcer initial printing and are much harder to find than their Type 2 counterparts — essentially the true first edition of these iconic 1930s Disney gum cards.
Population note: PSA currently shows only 3 examples graded PSA 5 for this Type 1 variety (with just 6 higher)
