Scarce and unusual antique business card / advertising card for Jim and Dave’s Auto Laundry of Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania (the historic name later changed to Jim Thorpe, PA). The card advertises automobile washing, polishing, and “Simonizing,” a once-famous hard wax treatment widely promoted during the early automobile era. The small card measures approximately 2 x 3.5 inches and features wonderful period cartoon graphics of attendants cleaning cars on the front.
The reverse contains a humorous “hard luck” style complaint monologue referencing taxes, Liberty Bonds, war tax, Red Cross drives, matrimony, and financial struggles — a colorful slice of early 20th century American advertising humor. The references to Liberty Bonds and wartime taxation suggest an approximate dating in the interwar period, likely late 1910s–1930s.
A terrific small-town Pennsylvania automotive advertising item with strong graphics, early car wash history appeal, and regional interest tied to historic Mauch Chunk.
