Nearly six decades after the Civil War, these reunions served as important social and commemorative events for aging soldiers who had served in the Confederate ranks. By the early 1920s, most surviving veterans were well into their 70s and 80s, and reunions like this offered one of the few remaining opportunities for comrades to reconnect, reminisce, and honor their shared experiences.
Asheville, with its mountain scenery and growing reputation as a resort destination, frequently hosted veteran and fraternal gatherings in the early 20th century. The Grove Park region—near the famous Grove Park Inn—provided an elegant and scenic backdrop for such notable events. These reunions typically included parades, speeches, band performances, and memorial services dedicated to fallen soldiers.
This image is a poignant reminder of the final generation of Civil War veterans, photographed during a period when national reconciliation and remembrance were common themes in American class="MsoNormal" align="left">Product Details
