1911 Postcard, Brabazon's Aeroplane, First English Flight, Posted Nebraska
Voisin pusher biplane subject... genuine 1911 postal use with a full handwritten letterDESCRIPTIONThis is an antique tinted litho postcard titled "Brabazon's Aeroplane," showing a pioneer era pusher biplane parked on a grass flying field with its pilot at the controls and its distinctive bicycle wheel undercarriage. The subject is the aircraft flown by J.T.C. Moore-Brabazon, who became the first resident Englishman to make an officially recognized powered aeroplane flight in England, on May 2, 1909, at Shellbeach on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. That aircraft was a Voisin built pusher biplane he had learned to fly on in France the year before and nicknamed "Bird of Passage." Moore-Brabazon went on to win a 1,000 pound Daily Mail prize later that year and became the first person to hold a pilot's certificate in Britain, so this card documents a genuinely foundational figure in British aviation history rather than a minor footnote. This example was actually used in the mail.It carries a one cent green Franklin stamp cancelled with a postmark reading January 31, 1911 from a post office whose name ends in "-ville" (partially legible), and it also shows a second duplex postmark from Lincoln, Nebraska dated February 2, 1911.The correspondence side is dated January 30, 1911 and carries a full handwritten letter from a sender signing as Harry Clifton, addressed to Miss Georgia in Lincoln, Nebraska, mentioning cards and letters previously exchanged and a planned visit in June.Images were scanned at 600dpi so you can review the postmarks and handwriting closely before buying.Every effort is made toward fact checking and provenance, including background research through news and historical archives. There is a diagonal crease running through the upper portion of the front image and light toning to the sky area, along with soft corner wear typical of a card that traveled through the mail. The back shows two legible postmarks, an intact affixed stamp, and a fully legible handwritten letter in period ink with no tears or paper loss. The recipient's street address was later amended in pencil, which is a common period or collector annotation rather than damage.
Overall size is standard postcard format, approximately 5.5 x 3.5 inches. The printed image runs to the edges of the card with no separate border, so the true image size is essentially the full card size.
