LETTER AUTHOR: EVERETT M. VAILE of South Londonderry, Vermont was active around the turn of the 20th century as a photographer and local correspondent. His work survives today in the Everett Vaile Collection at the South Londonderry Free Library, which includes over 2,500 glass-plate photographic negatives dating from roughly 1890–1910 documenting life and landscapes in the region.

Original February 21, 1903 handwritten penmanship business letter from E. M. VAILE of South Londonderry, Vermont, addressed to Miss RUTH SARGENT of Blowing Rock, North Carolina. The letter is written on a light green sheet measuring approximately 8.5 × 11 inches, executed in elegant ornamental script typical of turn-of-the-century professional penmen.

The letter reads in part:

“Replying to your kind favor I enclose one of my circulars and samples of card writing. I would be pleased to have your patronage for anything you may need in my line. Will send you 25 cards for 30¢.”

Vaile signs the letter clearly “E. M. Vaile.”

The document illustrates the early 20th-century mail-order trade in ornamental penmanship, when professional writers produced decorative name cards and announcements for customers across the country. These cards were commonly collected in scrapbooks or used for correspondence and personal stationery.

This letter also connects to another related piece from the same correspondence group — a 1902 letter written by Vaile to Frederick W. Tamblyn of Kansas City, one of the most prominent teachers of Modern Business Penmanship. That companion letter is listed separately unless otherwise sold.

Condition: age toning, fold lines from mailing/storage, and a small edge loss at the upper left corner. Ink remains strong and the writing is highly legible.

An attractive and historically interesting example of American ornamental penmanship and mail-order writing services at the beginning of the 20th century.

Authentic period piece related to family, historyor local heritage - well-suited for historical collections, genealogical /genealogy research, or museum acquisition.Vintage or Antique.

CONDITION: There are some tears as shown. See listing description and photos.
