The 1896 French Calvary sword was originally designed for heavy, and light unit use. It has a light straight "T" shaped blade that was not popular with troops due to tendency to snap in combat. These became popular with officers less likely to endure a sword fight. These fancy fantasy types were special ordered from many manufacturers private, and public. This one has no maker mark but was finely made. This one does have the haunting Medusa face inside the bronze hilt above the "brice-pointe" or point breaker. Hand tooling adorns the floral images throughout the hilt, and pommel. The blade is near perfect, no nicks. the horn handle is loose from shrinkage. The overall condition is great with normal use from wearing as part of uniform of the time. These are a rare find these days, this is a nice addition to any sword collection. Size is 43.38" overall with scabbard, 41.50 is the overall sword, 35.56" blade length, and the scabbard is 37.19" long. Thanks for looking!
