The division was activated at Camp Hale, Colorado in 1943. Elements of the division landed in Italy December- January 1945. The full division fought through Italy to Lake Garda in Northen Italy. The division fought through mountainous terrain from Pisa through the Po Valley.
The division landed in Italy Naples, fought at Mount Belvedere, Mount Torraccia, and took intact the Panaro River bridge at Bomporto. they crossed the Po River in assault boats, striking north to Verona. Elements of the division conducted an amphibious crossing of Lake Garda and took Gargnano and Portio di Tremosine. In Italy, the Germans surrender by 2 May, 1945.
