Up for sale is an authentic, vintage Northwest Coast First Nations hand-carved wooden wall plaque depicting a stylized Eagle.
This piece features traditional Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka̱ʼwakw) formline design elements with deep, precise cuts and a beautiful natural wood finish. The reverse side is hand-signed by the artisan, G. Clair, along with the tribal affiliation "Kwakiutl" and the subject 6 inches tall (please see photos with ruler for exact measurements).
Condition:
The carving is in excellent vintage condition. The front face is clean and beautifully preserved. The back shows two minor, natural signs of age/use: a tiny organic insect pinhole (common in native seasoned wood) and a small light scuff at the very bottom edge where the raw wood is exposed due to friction from hanging. Neither affects the display value or structural integrity of the piece. Please review all photos for a detailed look at the condition.
Ships carefully packaged to ensure safe arrival. Feel free to message with any questions!G. Clair is an independent, community-level Indigenous artisan from the Kwakiutl nation (properly known as the Kwakwaka̱ʼwakw).
While they are not a highly publicized museum-level master carver (like the renowned Hunt, Matilpi, or Cranmer families), they represent an important class of traditional Pacific Northwest Coast carvers:
• Production Class Artist: Artists like G. Clair specialize in smaller format decorative plaques, model totems, and panels carved primarily for local galleries, cultural trading posts, and the regional Pacific Northwest art trade.
• Cultural Preservation: Despite not being widely documented in historical art indexes, independent artists like G. Clair are deeply respected within regional networks for keeping traditional formline carving methods, layout structures, and wood-shaping skills alive through accessible trade ware.
Because small-scale, independent Indigenous carvers working from family workshops in British Columbia rarely establish centralized digital biographies, their legacy survives through the distinct hand-carved details, signature styles, and proper tribal attribution found directly on the back of their surviving works.
