The Louisiana Purchase, in 1803, was considered the greatest real estate deal in history. Signed in Paris on April 30, 1803, the treaty enabled the United States to acquire about 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River from France, effectively doubling the size of the nation and setting the stage for westward expansion. The land sold for $15 million. To finance the purchase, the United States Treasury issued a mix of bonds and French debts owed to American citizens, with the final cost reaching about $23,221,000, including interest payments. The stock became known as the “Louisiana 6 percent stocks.” The bonds were not redeemable for 15 years.

JAMES COMERFORD purchased stock supporting the purchase. In the historically important document offered here, Comerford is attempting to transfer his holdings to Francis Gibbons. One-page, 8 x 10, part-print, part manuscript document, dated June 12, 1817, in which Comerford of London transferred to Francis Gibbons, a London merchant, “the sum of six thousand dollars of Louisiana Domestic six percent stock standing in the name of him the said constituent in the Books of the United States Loan Office for the Rate of New York being the amount of three certificates...for four thousand dollars and two for one thousand dollars each...”

Small wafer seal intact. Boldly signed by Comerford and docketed nicely on the verso. Nice revenue seal embossed in the upper left for one pound, ten shillings. Rare to find documents relating to the Louisiana Purchase.

Thomas Jefferson played a strong role in the Louisiana Purchase, orchestrating the negotiations. His primary goal was to secure the crucial port of New Orleans and the Mississippi River, which were vital for westward expansion and trade.

The Louisiana Purchase exposed sectional weaknesses between the North and the South, especially related to the slavery issue. As new territories and states were created, the desire to maintain the balance between free states and slave states required a series of fragile compromises, notably the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850. Eventually, as agreements became more difficult to achieve, civil war became inevitable.
