In the 1960s Chrysler Corporation was heavily involved in stock car racing. It was thought that the hemi-powered 1968 Dodge Charger would do really well on the track, but the fact was that the car had serious issues with front-end lift (due to the recessed grill), drag and turbulence (due to the backlight area between the rear roof pillars). After much testing in a wind tunnel, the geniuses at Chrysler found that they could significantly improve aerodynamics by using a flush mount grill (borrowed from the 1968 Coronet) and filling in the rear window area with a flush mount piece of glass which then shortened the trunk lid as well. Also, the front A pillars received treatment in the form of wider than usual trim. The resulting car was named the Charger 500 as NASCAR regulations required at least 500 to be produced. This example is one of the very early production 500s and is matching numbers throughout. It is a very rare version of an already rare car with desirable options such as super track pak and 4 speed transmission. This car was treated to a full professional rotisserie restoration. The car is absolutely beautiful and runs and drives like it is brand new (which essentially it is) with less than 200 miles on it since completion.
