With the proliferation of clones and outright fake muscle cars, it?s important to get all the documentation to verify you?re actually buying what you think you?re buying. This 1966 Oldsmobile 442 is a spectacular survivor with just one repaint and a rebuilt engine, and comes with goodies such as the original window sticker and order form, confirming its pedigree. The days of the 442 being overlooked by collectors are long gone, and after you get a look at this fantastic Provincial White hardtop, you won?t wonder why. Purchased new in North Carolina, it has always been a southern car, so the bodywork and floor pan are 100% original and 100% rust-free. The big Olds looks fantastic in the fresh two-stage urethane paint, which accurately replicates the original finish but will last practically forever. But other than the paint, the trim is all original and really tells you all you need to know about how nice this car really is. The bumpers are bright, the stainless doesn?t have any dings, and the blacked-out 442 grille is almost perfect. Then there are those cool fender vents which are only just now coming back into fashion, but never have they looked so good as they do on this car. Shockingly, the dark red bench seat interior is also completely original and beautifully preserved. The mileage shown is quite likely accurate given the condition of all the soft parts, and there?s no kit on the market today that can replicate the factory detailing. The original owner (Allen Crosby Cooper, if you?re interested) seemed to like a little luxury with his performance, and specified options such as a heavy-duty automatic transmission, power windows, power steering, and a deluxe radio. The radio has been replaced by a newer AM/FM/cassette head unit, which, along with a column-mounted tach and a set of auxiliary gauges under the dash, makes this big cruiser a pleasure to drive. Everything remains in great condition, from the carpet to the door panels to the headliner, and there?s no doubt that Mr. Cooper, as well as the two subsequent owners, cherished this car. The original, numbers-matching 400 cubic inch V8 remains under the hood. Both the engine and the Jetaway transmission were rebuilt in 2007, and it runs beautifully today. They also used that opportunity to fully detail the engine bay, so there?s fresh Oldsmobile Gold paint on the block, and a proper air cleaner up top with a carefully preserved 442 decal still intact. Everything appears to be stock, so there are no parts-store modifications to hurt value, but you won?t be hurting for horsepower, that?s for sure! Underneath, it?s incredibly solid and rust-free, and a recent dual exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers sounds like pure horsepower. Brand new Oldsmobile Rallye wheels were installed along with a set of reproduction BFGoodrich Silvertown redline radials for a traditional look and modern handling. Documented, beautifully preserved, and just plain cool, this 442 delivers for serious Oldsmobile collectors.
