Numero Uno. The big cheese. You want a show winner, you want the win to mean something huge? How about first place, OVERALL, at the ’08 Mopar Nationals?  That’s right-first place in the senior division, because it took home 2007’s AAR/ T/A trophy and wasn’t eligible in that class again to keep things fair to others! This AAR, painted in one of my top three favorite Mopar colors, Sassy Grass Green, drives as well as it shows! We have plenty of paperwork: Galen Govier report Original fender tags, as well as reproductions Complete photo record of restoration Copies of all receipts Judging sheets from 2007 & 2008 Mopar Nationals List of all awards earned in 2007 & 2008 The car took 2009-2010 off to sit in a climate-controlled private collection, moving an insignificant 35 miles since its 'nats win--this car looks as good now as it did then. Pull the hood pins and gently lift on the hood (not the scoop!) to show the immaculately detailed engine compartment. There's a ton of detail in here! Obviously there are the correct hoses and spark plug wires, and the air filter’s correct, and the date code correct, T/A motor’s the right shade of super glossy orange and the compartment itself is gorgeous. Cool little details are everywhere, though, from the correct, dimpled and date coded voltage regulator to the “MADE IN CANADA” paint stamp on the radiator to the ECS Automotive-sourced wiring harness tags to the date coded Quanta belt. The underside of the hood is matte black (non textured) as original and the wiper motor and other plated parts sparkle. Best of all, the car runs and drives flawlessly.  Starting the car is drama-free, as the car settles to an idle after very little cranking.  The carburetors are some of the best-tuned we've ever driven for a six pack, transitioning from part throttle to full with nearly no delay and a huge kick in the pants.  The steering box is obviously a rebuilt piece, as there is extremely little free play--that's an almost impossible task on Mopar manual steering setups.  The brakes, the best muscle-car era setup Chrysler put in a car (discs up front and 11" drums out back) work as they should, without pulling to one side or grabbing.  The transmission shifts great, and the Slap-Stik shifter's adjusted perfectly.  Few 'cudas of any caliber work this well! AARs and T/As have at least two tags, one (or more) for codes and a second tag that says “TRANS AM” for the A53 package. This is a concours restored car, and not an O.E. certified car. What’s the difference? Concours cars have protective finishes on everything to preserve the car forever, while O.E. guys spend their lives wiping down unprotected parts with light oil or celebrating surface rust. While there’s nothing wrong with pursuing assembly line perfection, you’ll have none of that with this car. It will be as gorgeous in 20 years as it is right now, and that’s impressive. Inspection marks and paint splotches are everywhere, the floor pans are as shiny as the body and the suspension is detailed to level 11. Rallye wheels hold the correct E60-15 front and G60-15 rear tires as the AAR and T/A models were the first production cars in the world to have staggered tire sizes. Also present is the top level suspension with Hemi-spec torsion bars and leaf springs, and front and rear sway bars, and all of it is impeccably done. Detailing a ‘Cuda 101 continues in the trunk, with the correct space saver spare replete with a white ink stamp tire size and designation residing within. Lifting the correct mat reveals a trunk pan you could eat off of. Plenty of cash was spent replating the taillight housings, the trunk latch and the jack post, too, but when you go this far, go all out! The interior is simply beautiful. New seats and foams take center stage, accented on the floor by a mint console and redone seat belts with more of ECS’s tags. A mint dash pad covers the perfect gauges, the steering wheel and column are perfect and everything from the carpet to the headliner isn’t just new--it’s installed and working to an unreal standard! One of 42 known in Sassy Grass Green, the color is as uncommon as it is beautiful, accounting for a mere 4% of known cars! The color works so well on AARs thanks to the blacked out treatments. The paint is a solid 10 out of 10, but the Organisol blows it away. Shiny, perfect paint is hard to achieve, but that textured stuff is nearly impossible to get right, and it’s very nice here. Blue Star Performance in LaSalle, IL, who restored the car from top to bottom did a magnificent job on the hood, fender and door tops and the rear spoiler. Obviously perfect chrome and stainless compliment the outstanding finish from the AAR-specific grille to the taillight bezels. If you’re into Mopars, you either saw this car at the ‘Nats or know someone who was blown away by it. This is arguably the nicest AAR on the planet, in a cool, rare color to boot.
