LExterior Color: OtherInterior Color: WhiteTitle: Clear DescriptionBelieved to be the start to the niche market of personal luxury cars, Ford nailed the concept with the offering of the Thunderbird. Luxurious, classy, sporty, and powerfull, this model outsold GM's Corvette 5 to 1. Today you have the opportunity to own one of these beautys. Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum A 1962 Ford Thunderbird 2 Door Hardtop. It's a very strong runner and a real head turner. By all appearances, it seems to have been very well kept, and garaged over the later years of its life. It is very clean both inside and out. An older repaint in what appears to be a paint code L (Teaberry Sahara Rose) instead of the factory paint code T (Sandshell Beige Champagne) still shines well and the body seems to be as straight as it was the day it left the factory. There is a small ding on the drivers side above the wheel opening but you have to be very close to see it. There does not appear to be any evidence of body work under the repaint. There are some places where the paint is wearing thin along the roof line and on the front fenders near the windshield. None of which detract from the overall beauty of this T-Bird. The chrome/stainless, glass, (with the exception for the cracked windshield) and lighting lenses are all in very good shape considering their age. There is some fading and patina in the brightwork but nothing major. There is no readily visible rust to be found in the body, floors, trunk, or engine compartment. The undercarriage has the common surface rust. The interior is neat and clean, still in its original form. The only flaw to be found is a very small section of the driver's seat where a seam has separated. Interior functions could use some work as there are a few systems that are currently not operating properly. The horn, the clock, the cigarette lighter, the fuel gauge, the temperature gauge, the aftermarket amp gauge, and the indicator light for the headlights all do not function. All of the lighting operates but the headlight switch is a little loose and the turn signal switch for the right side needs to be held in place when signaling. The left side will click into place and hold. The T-Bird is equipped with aftermarket oil and amp gauges. The car has undergone a recent mechanical inspection and had the necessary repairs completed. Recent repairs done 4/8/2011 at 50,871 miles include a rebuilt carburetor, the fuel tank removed and cleaned, a new fuel pump, a new power brake unit, and the left rear brake cylinder was replaced. The original transmission was rebuilt by AAMCO and a new torque converter installed 1/17/2006 at 50,827 miles. The T-Bird drives great and it is responsive to both acceleration and braking. The suspension is noise free but is worn. The car is a bit squirrelly at 65 mph but does not feel unsafe. It kind of "floats" as you drive. There is some wind noise that can be heard from the driver's side wing or vent window and a very small ticking noise can be heard under heavy acceleration. Possibly a small exhaust leak. During idle, the oil light will dimly illuminate occasionally but the aftermarket oil pressure gauge shows consistent normal oil pressure. The only other known issue with this car is the driver's side window glass will bind a little against the rear glass causing the door to stick slightly when opening. Other than that and the previously mentioned minor issues, this Thunderbird is truely a fine example of a classic Ford. Production Information Original list price: $4,321Number produced: 69,554 (all coupes) The History Interest in “sporting” cars grew in the U.S. following WW II. Cars like the MG TD and the Jaguar XK120 gained a following but the major American car companies didn’t see enough of a market to do much until Chevrolet offered the Corvette in 1953. Ford, who had been reluctant to enter such a small market, had to respond and brought out the two-seat Thunderbird in 1955.Following a three year development cycle, the so called “small bird” two-seater was offered from 1955-1957. Feeling that sales would improve with a four seat car led to the “square bird” Thunderbirds of 1958-1960. The larger car with its formal roof, central interior console, and ability to carry four people led to increased sales. 1961 saw the debut of the “bullet bird” series, so-called because the car had a distinct bullet shape with pointed front fenders when viewed from the side. This series also featured the large, round taillights that many felt looked like jet exhausts and which were a recurring design element for Thunderbirds and other Ford models. This series had only one engine and transmission combination, the 390 cu. in., 300 HP V-8 with a three speed automatic. A unique option was the “swing-away” steering wheel that could be swung ten degrees to the right after placing the car in park to facilitate entry and exit from the car. Two special models arrived in 1962. The Landau was a more luxurious version of the standard coupe and the Sport Roadster featured wire wheels and a hard tonneau over the rear seats that mimicked the two-seaters of the past.
