Now is your chance to own a piece of drag racing history? This is not a model kit or a 1/18 scale die cast car (although this car has been immortalized as both), this is the actual Bob Hamilton 1970 RED ALERT Chevelle SS454 LS6 Super Stock Race Car. One of only a handful of "plastic model kit" cars that have survived the test of time, and of those, very possibly the only one not in need of a full restoration. Few cars have had such an illustrious career and have become so beloved by fans as the  RED ALERT Chevelle, featured in many different magazines and been invited to almost every prestigious event in the country. Just recently featured by special invitation at the Muscle Car And Corvette Nationals, Chicago. This rare, legendary car is ready to be raced, shown or placed in a museum. In UN-RESTORED condition, with a rich history and tons of documentation. Now for a  brief history In early 1970 Bob Hamilton, former AFX Ford factory racer from New Jersey, decided to purchase a new car for his wife. Bob's passion for speed had not diminished, so he went to Byrne Brothers Chevrolet, North White Plains, NY and ordered a cranberry red 1970 Chevelle SS equipped with all options available, including automatic transmission, power windows, power steering, rear window defogger, and the newly released 460HP LS6 engine. He gave the car to his wife for Valentines Day and expressed his feelings in the license plate (ILY-384) which stood for "I Love You." It wasn't in her possession for long before Bob began to realize the awesome untapped power of the 454. The car soon began to disappear on Sundays, eventually reappearing each week with a new modification. It was at this point that the Hamilton family decided to take the car off the street and go after the SS/DA (Super Sport D-Automatic class) record. Because of all of the talk at the time about the cold war with the Soviet Union, the car was dubbed RED ALERT and soon became one of the most popular 1970 Chevelles ever to exist. The lettering and distinctive black ?swoosh? were painted by Mr. Hammerly from Allentown, PA, who came up with saying that is still present on the rear of the car ??the Devil made me do it?, taken from the Flip Wilson?s popular TV show. With Bob at the wheel the best time that the car recorded was a 10:75 at 123 mph in 1976. Not too bad for a modified stock car weighing in at 3,980 pounds and containing numerous factory options. By mid-1971, plastic model maker AMT noticed the unique car and began sponsoring Hamilton. AMT?s logo appeared on the car?s flanks and it wasn?t long before a model was on the shelves of hobby stores across the country. The 1/25 scale RED ALERT Chevelle SS quickly became the best selling AMT plastic. model ever, The car was also featured as the 25th anniversary edition as a three piece model kit containing the car, the Chevy van tow vehicle and the tilt bed trailer and has been reproduced as a diecast 1/18 scale model by Ertl, in two separate runs of 2500 cars.  Another prominent sponsor was the Motor Wheel Corporation, who supplied Bob with wheels. Retirement came in 1976 after a long and extremely successful career. RED ALERT held the SS/DA record during part of 1972. SS/DA was a very hotly contested class at that time and the record in some cases changed from week to week. The car also held the track record at Island Dragway in New Jersey for a couple of years straight. In the latter part of its illustrious career, RED ALERT won top eliminator 14 out of 16 times at Bradenton Dragway in Florida. In 1976, the car was purchased from Bob Hamilton by Terry Carney. In 1990, the most famous Chevelle in the world reappeared and was purchased by Bill & Jan Stephenson and owned along with Terry Carney. The front plate says it all - Evil, Wicked, Mean & Nasty. Elapsed times had been reduced to the low 10 second range and the speed had grown to over 130 mph.. After a couple of years of nostalgia drag racing, RED ALERT was once again retired from racing, becoming a ?show piece? for various collectors, until 2008, when it was purchased by Tom Clary, who began showing, and of course, racing it on a regular basis. A crowd favorite whereever it goes, twisting as the front end reaches for the sky on every launch, with ¼ mile ETs in the 10.70 range. A true legend in every sense of the word. Beautifully maintained and ready to race or to show. Today RED ALERT retains all of its original sheetmetal, over 50% of its original paint, original interior, and  most of the lettering is original. Being an un-restored drag car, it does have a few minor "battle scars", such as scraps, chips, etc, with occasional touchup, but overall, in very nice condition.
