A 1960 Cadillac Convertible, now for auction on eBay! Single Owner Survivor: 1960 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible Heavily influenced by jet aircraft and space rockets, envisioning the advent of flying cars as the standard mode of transportation, American automobiles of the late 1950s feature the most outrageous George-Jetson-style designs ever devised. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The zenith of ostentatiousness was reached with the 1959 Cadillac and the 1961 Imperial which featured rear stabilizing fins worthy of airplanes. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Basically a 1959 Cadillac sans the two rocket lights emerging from its tailfins, many enthusiasts see the 1960 Cadillac as the most harmonious design of them all. Here's a car that will turn heads everywhere it shows, and no attempt to excuse its opulence is being made. Success is great, and showing it off by driving a flamboyant cruiser should be nothing to feel ashamed about! The 1960 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible featured here, one of 14,000 manufactured during the model year, is an honest-to-goodness survivor. Featuring most of its factory original paint and interior, it hails from Washington State where it was in the care of its one and only owner for the past 51 years. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Let's now have a closer look at this luxury car that personifies the old adage of bigger is better, starting up front, where the big V-8 power plant resides in an engine compartment the size of a dining room. Rated at 325 horsepower, the 390 cu. in. motor is said to propel the majestic car from 0-60 in 10.3 seconds. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Caddy's engine is the original, matching numbers unit, with all original accessories intact. It starts every time, idles smoothly, and runs strong. There's no smoke, but the factory dual exhaust is a bit on the noisy side. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Cad's body has survived amazingly well. There are a few dings, of course, a couple of scratches near the fender skirts, and a dent at the very rear of the lower right fender. The rockers show some rust and should be replaced (unless you elect to drive the car "as is"), which is an easy job. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The car has never been in a major accident. There is some bondo near the lip of the deck lid, but most of its Inverness Green paint seems to be the factory-applied -- if heavily patinated -- coat. Except for one $50 eyebrow piece, the brightwork is complete and in acceptable to very good condition throughout. Especially the front bumper and grille are still in very nice condition. Correct, white convertible power top shows no rips or tears, has to be manually operated, though. Check out the nicely preserved factory hubcaps! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Moving on to the interior, we admire the Cadillac's elegant dash design. Everything looks original and in fine fettle, including the steering wheel and the abundant chrome trim. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Breathtakingly expensive to refurbish, the vulnerable dash top is without cracks! Praise the fact that this car has lived protected from the merciless sun rays that so often "bake" the interiors of Southwestern cars. Note futuristic-looking Autronic Eye atop dash. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Incredibly, the car still displays its original, 52-year-old, metallic green leather interior. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) As you can imagine, more than half a century of wear and aging have created a certain patina on the leather. We love it the way it is, however, others might want to replace it during a future restoration of the car. Door panels are nice. The original carpeting has been replaced by some incorrect material. Best of all, there are no missing parts that could create big headaches to find and rip a large hole in your wallet, should you decide to restore the car down the line. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Seat belts for three rear passengers - yep, the Cad is a full 6-seater! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Ready for a test drive? So are we, but before we leave, let's have a quick look inside the trunk. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Trunk contains original spare and jacking equipment, as well as top boot. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The car lived on a farm in Eastern Washington all its life, and the undercarriage shows lots of surface rust and some caked-on mud. The right rear wheel well, near the rear attachment of the fender skirt, will need some rust repair, and there might be other areas of concern, such as the lower doors and quarter panels where the paint is bubbling; however, to the naked eye, the car appears structurally sound. Click on any of the above images for a full-size view There are two rust spots in the trunk: one near the left wheel well, and one on the right, close to the taillight. Remainder of trunk floor is very dry and clean. There's no trunk mat. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Sunday, February 5, turned out to be a super nice winter day here in Ventura. Directing the land yacht toward the Ventura hills, we were pleased to find that the car is perfectly capable to be driven as is. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Power steering is a must, and on this '60, it works great. The big drum brakes are power-assisted as well; they are in very good working order, since we just installed new brake lines all around and a new master cylinder, too. The Hydramatic transmission shifts well through all gears. Lights and gauges work fine, including back-up and interior lights. Front passenger side power window works, the others will need to be serviced, as does the power seat. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Overall, the Caddy is ready to be driven, with some room left for general improvement, of course. The proverbial Cadillac smoothness on any kind of road is still very much in evidence. With those old tires, we don't advise a cross-country trip, but around town, we found the old gal to be a most pleasurable ride. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Returning home, we're all smiles. This big finned Cad lives up to its reputation; is looks glamorous, if a bit like a faded Hollywood film star, and we'd take it for another cruise to our local Starbucks anytime. This car turns heads, receiving an incredible amount of attention everywhere we take it, especially if parked next to all the 21st century plastic bubblemobiles! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The 1959 and 1960 Cadillacs are highly prized and extremely collectible. Here's an excellent opportunity to purchase a very desirable car -- sporting a superb period color combination -- that you can drive "as is" and improve upon if and when you are ready, at your own pace.
